Leelanau Peninsula General Information

Unique Geography
The lower peninsula of Michigan is often described as a "mitten". The Leelanau Peninsula can be described as the "little finger" in that mitten. Others call the Leelanau Peninsula the Third Coast or North Coast. With dunes that rise high over Lake Michigan offering sweeping views, acres of farmland filled with cherry trees and grapevines and a vast variety of recreation opportunities, describing Leelanau County with words alone is difficult.

The Leelanau Peninsula is home to a variety of towns and villages that are far removed from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Take a drive along M-22 which hugs the shore of Lake Michigan as it wanders around the edge of the Peninsula passing through Suttons Bay, Omena, Northport, Leland, Glen Arbor, and Empire. Maple City, Cedar and Lake Leelanau are located in the interior of the peninsula. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore covers miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan in the southwestern portion of the county. In any of these places, you'll find friendly faces and open spaces for recreation or relaxation.

Opportunities Galore
Leelanau has so much to offer to residents and visitor alike. Hiking, biking, boating, and fishing in the summer. Skiing and sledding in the winter. Shop the one-of-a-kind village shops anytime. And don't forget the festivals. From the Cedar Polka Fest to the Suttons Bay Jazz Festival, there is something for everyone.

If great food and wine is what you're looking for, Leelanau is the place. The peninsula is home to many wineries that produce award winning varieties. Farmers Markets celebrate the agricultural heritage of the area offering a wide selection of locally grown produce. Restaurants range from casual to fine dining. Our love of food and wine is celebrated at events such as the Taste of Leelanau and Leland Wine Festival.

Don't let Leelanau's rural character and small towns fool you. We love arts and culture here, too. Leelanau is home to many very talented artists who are inspired by the beauty of our peninsula. The area offers an impressive variety of musical events, art exhibitions and cultural events in addtion to our collection of galleries and shops.
