Agriculture

The Leelanau Peninsula has a rich agricultural history and farming is an integral part of the character of our communities. Many acres of farmland are preserved for future generations through the Leelanau Conservancy and other conservation organizations.

More than 40,000 acres of Leelanau County's land was in agricultural use in 2000 and in 1997, Leelanau County growers produced more cherries than any other county in the country. Traverse City, located just to the southwest of the Leelanau Peninsula, is home to the National Cherry Festival, an annual event that celebrates the great taste and health benefits of the Cherry.

Grapes are the second largest farm product in Leelanau county and supply the growing wine industry in on the Peninsula. Click here for a directory of wineries on the Leelanau Peninsula.

Along the roadside or in our towns or villages, farm stands and farm markets offer fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season. Click here for a directory of businesses offering farm products or click here for a listing of community-based farmers markets.

The scenic beauty and rural character of farmland contribute to the high quality of life that makes Leelanau County a desirable place to live, work and play.
